2 People Shot at Wheeling Hotel, 1 Dead

The Brief

One man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting Sunday evening at the MainStay Suites in Wheeling, Illinois.

Wheeling police responded to the hotel in the 8000 block of Capital Drive at about 6:51 p.m. on August 23 after receiving a report of shots fired. Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where one victim later died.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as a 60-year-old Chicago man. His name had not been released as of Monday.

What We Know

Officers from Wheeling and neighboring departments responded to the MainStay Suites after the reported gunfire.

Police provided emergency medical assistance to the two victims until Wheeling firefighters arrived. Both men were then transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

One victim survived his injuries. The other was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 8:10 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police have not released information about what led to the shooting or whether the victims knew each other. Authorities also had not announced an arrest as of Monday.

The shooting happened at the same hotel where police investigated another shooting in November 2025. That earlier incident involved a wounded man and a police standoff.

The Wheeling Police Department's Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate the shooting with assistance from the Major Case Assistance Team.
